Excerpts from Judge Baker’s legal self-help book....

Susan P. Baker serves on the Editorial Board of The Texas Center for the Judiciary's official publication, "In Chambers." She was a district court judge in Texas from January 1, 1991 until December 31, 2002, and still sits by assignment. Earlier, she practiced law for eight years. While in law school at South Texas College of Law, Susan worked as an adult probation officer.

Susan spearheaded a drive for courthouse security in Galveston County beginning in 1990. The idea for MURDERED JUDGES of the 20TH CENTURY came after she began researching courthouse violence to document the need for security.

In the 1970s, Susan was a founder of the Women's Resource and Crisis Center of Galveston County. She later served on the board and volunteered at the center. After taking office, she was instrumental (in Galveston County) in the founding of the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program for volunteer advocates for abused and neglected children, Operation Outreach, a prison visitation program for delinquent youth, For Kid's Sake, a parenting program for parents in the court system, and Mediation in family law cases. In 1997, Susan wrote and won two grants to reform the court system in child abuse and neglect cases and thus Galveston County began a model court program for the state of Texas. In 1999, Susan was a founder of the Texas Chapter of the AFCC (Association of Family and Conciliation Courts), an organization of professionals collaborating to improve the lot of children and families in the court system. She served as President of the Texas Chapter of the AFCC in 2000-2001. In July 2002, the Women's Resource and Crisis Center honored her with their Helping Hands Award.

Susan's 20+ years of working in various capacities with families and children in crisis, and witnessing the heartbreak and meanness of litigation, lead to the writing of her book, HEART OF DIVORCE: Advice from a Judge.

Prior to running for office, Susan wrote and published her novel MY FIRST MURDER, A Mavis Davis Mystery, (AuthorHouse, 2004)(St. Martin's Press, Inc. 1989).

Susan has served as Regional Vice-president (President) of the Southwest Chapter of Mystery Writers of America, and is currently a member of Sisters in Crime, Private Eye Writers of America, International Women Writers Guild, Mystery Writers of America, and Authors Guild. She also is a current member of AFCC and the National Association of Women Judges.

Born and raised in Texas, Susan spent the majority of her life in Galveston and has recently moved to the Texas hill country. She enjoys traveling and has visited every state in the U.S. as well as Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Holland, Italy, Okinawa, Mexico, The Bahamas, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, and Sweden.

She is married, the mother of 2 children, and the grandmother of 5 children.

Susan loves to read, sew, craft, swim, walk, cook, entertain, and talk politics.
